Oiling
When clocks used to be lubricated with animal fats the oils would deteriorate within a couple of years, necessitating frequent oiling. Many manufacturers still recommend oiling every two years. However, the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute recommends that clocks be lubricated every three to four years because modern synthetic oils do not turn rancid and evaporate very slowly.
Many kinds of synthetic clock oils are available. Some are relatively inexpensive, but at Wise Owl Clock Repair, we prefer to use Etsyntha 859, the same oil used by the major German clock movement manufacturers.
